Commonly found resting on grass stems and other low-growing plants. It belongs to the Cercopidae family (better known as Froghoppers) and measures about 1cm in length. Distinctive, shiny red and black froghopper. Found resting on low vegetation and jumps well to escape danger. Common and widespread in hedgerows, woodland rides and meadows; seen from May to August. Feeds on plant sap. Nymphs found on roots.

Adult: April to August

Note Larva underground not as spittle as in the more common froghoppers
