Pill Woodlouse Armadillidium vulgare

Length 11mm

Interesting species, easily spotted rolling into a ball when disturbed protecting itself with its aropur plating. These Pill Bugs should not be confused with similar behaiour of the Pill Millipedes. Body colour uniform slate-grey. Widespread and reasonably common, Found in mature woodland where it hides under logs and in rotting wood during daytime; also in hedges and gardens. Active at night whem it prefers damp or moist conditions

 

Woodlice are crustaceans related to slaters, shrimps, lobsters and crabs, and belong to a group of arthropods called the Isopoda (suborder Oniscoidea). They are the only crustaceans that have properly invaded land, without returning to water in order to breed, although they tend to be restricted to fairly damp places.Woodlice breathe through air-holes on the hindmost pair of legs and they feed chiefly on rotting wood and other decaying vegetable matter.
