Descripttion

The adult moth has a typical tabby cat appearance with zig zag marks on wings , and fluffy grey to white hair that covers the body and large feathery antenna, females are slightly larger

The caterpillar is cloured blavk and greenfeeds on aspen (Populus tremula) as well as poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.). It exhibits defensive behaviour when disturbed , raising its head and waves the twin tails, which have pinkish extendable whips.They can also draw the head back into a thorax exhibitting a scarlet collar and two false black eyes.
